LISTEN:

- Don't make judgements

- Try to focus on their needs

- Allow them to share as much or as little as they want to

ASK:

- Ask them what would help them

- Keep questions open ended

- Offer professional help and give them information on how to get this help

- Talk about wellbeing (a healthy diet, exercise, taking a break, etc.)

WHAT YOU CAN SAY:

- Instead of saying "Just don't worry about it", say

“I’m here if you want to talk about how you feel.”

- Instead of saying, "Things will be better in the morning", say

"I'm here to listen."

- Instead of saying, "It's all in your head", say

"What can I do to help?"

- Instead of saying, "Just try to be positive", say

"This must be hard for you, but you’re going to get through it."

- Instead of saying, "Things could be worse", say

"Would you like to talk about what you’re going through? If not, who are you comfortable talking to?"
